Old Wives' Tales
1300 E Burnside While the food was decent, the service was--strange. I think I heard at one time that the proprietor reaches out to people in need and gives them jobs. I hope that's the case, because our poor waiter was definitely medicated in one way or another. The menu is crowded and confusing, and the atmosphere is upscale McDonalds. After all I'd heard about this place, I have to admit I was disappointed.

Rose and Raindrop
Appetizer: brie and roasted garlic on bread Everything was top-notch. I didn't expect a perfect delivery (we used d-dish again) steak, and it was medium rather than medium-rare, but oh boy, it was still tender and wonderful. The green beans that came with were a little too green, but the mashed potatoes were delicious without any add-ons. Bill loved his veggie lasagna, and the salad was gorgeous. We shared my black-bean soup, which was eye-rollingly good. The cake (we shared one piece) was rich, with a dark bite. This will be our place to go when I have a steak craving, but we still want good vegetarian for Bill. 7/4/04 UPDATE: I don't know what happened, but we ordered again from R&R about a week ago, and the whole meal was bad. Ah well.

Francis Xavier's
Located at 1933 NE 181st, Xavier's is an easy breakfast stop if you're heading east for the day. Just take the 181st Avenue exit off I-84 E, turn right, turn right again at the first light, and go left into the parking lot. Xavier's is always serving great breakfasts--they have a great eggs benedict, and one of the best chocolate milkshakes I've ever had. I have occasion to rent a car about twice a year, and I always find an excuse to head out to Xavier's at least once.
The Apple Peddler
Looking for a place to stop for food in Madras? When you see The Apple Peddler, keep driving. Like a Shari's or Denny's, The Apple Peddler is open 24 hours, and serves basic American food. Steaks, burgers, pies, and breakfast all day. Bill had a veggie burger, and I went for an old favorite, chicken fried steak and eggs. All the food was quite nearly tasteless. Only salt made it edible at all. Despite a tempting menu, we decided that dessert would only mean more disappointment.

Roxy
Great, greasy breakfast food, in a very casual atmosphere. A fave. |
